The Port of Felixstowe has suffered congestion for weeks and the problem has now spread to other ports, including another main port - the Port of Southampton.
The ongoing pandemic is being blamed for the disruption to shipping movements, but the UK has another headache – its final exit from the EU on the 1st January. Believing that the anticipation of a hard Brexit and bottlenecks would happen, people’s pre-Brexit stockpiling has increased the congestion.
The Department for Transport says it's aware of the issues at Felixstowe Port and, while it stressed this is a commercial matter for industry to resolve, it said it would continue to monitor the situation for any impact on wider supply chains.
